GREGORIO NIETO

A pupil of legendary Russian cellist Natalia Gutman at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Venezuelan cellist Gregorio Nieto has established an international career as a soloist and recording artist. His latest album, Opus 33 – Romantic Cello, was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra. Nieto began his musical journey through El Sistema and was mentored by its founder, Dr. José Antonio Abreu. A First Prize winner of the Heitor Villa-Lobos International Cello Competition, he has performed across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, working with conductors including Giuseppe Sinopoli, Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, and Gustavo Dudamel. Grammy Award-winning artist Paquito D’Rivera described Nieto as “one of the finest cellists I have had the opportunity to perform with.” Committed to expanding the cello repertoire, Nieto has commissioned two new concertos—the Caribbean Concerto and Spanish Concerto. He also serves as a jury member for international competitions, including the Khachaturian International Cello Competition. Among his recent projects, Nieto appears as cello soloist on Sir Anthony Hopkins’ album Life Is a Dream, recorded with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Gustavo Dudamel. ​He performs on a Spirito Sorsana cello, Turin, c. 1725.
